Another year done - here's another 'best of year' DnB mix - I have had more tunes to work with this year than ever before, and done more of my 'seasonal mixes' than usual, as you may have spotted... Strictly 176bpm for this one... I spent the whole of Sunday 30.10.22 listening to every DnB release on Juno since my previous visit on 28.09 - these are my pick - quite a few of these are first time purchases for some artists, I've tried to rep the true underground here.
I've included two of mine also - at the start and at the end - both are part of a 'vip vip' remix project with my bro Mask - taking old tunes and giving them a 2022 update - once that's done I'll release it in full, still some way to go but wanted to give y'all a taste.
The cover pic is of Lake Windermere from Loughrigg fell - not my pic - but I walked up there in June 2012 in a dramatic rainy twilight - and was so inspired by the view I started working on a tune on my laptop when I got back to the guest house in Keswick... it's now complete, track 2) below.

In June 2012 I had a lil pipe and walked up Loughrigg Fell - in a rainy twilight - the view was as per this pic but way more dramatic - I was so inspired I went back to my guest house in Keswick, Lake District and started writing this tune on my laptop - the bassline and leads and two simple breaks...
.. my then Mrs was less than impressed - but a creator's gotta create, not just when she goes out with her mates once in a blue moon 😂 - that's why I've been single for the last 9 years 😎 The reason I'm posting this tune now - I've given it a 2022 makeover, to be shared soon...

Hey folks - I've been working alongside my bro Mask on two projects, at the same time - one of them is an 'old tunes VIP remixed by me and him' thing - this tune is a sample from that album, still a work in progress.
Album three is something else, not for sharing yet - a bit of drumstep, some 92/93/94 vibe jungle tekno - all to be revealed.
In the meantime - this track contains original samples I made back in 2007 - from a game on my 360 called 'The Orange Box' - it was set in the Half Life universe - and there were three games from said universe on the same game/box.
This is in my all time top 5 games, and I count myself as a gamer having bought my first xbox back in 2003.
The vocal samples, still crack me up - GLaDOS was the AI in charge of you taking you through a series of tests, the most brilliantly scathing, insulting, sarcastic AI that I've ever heard in a game - there was a little snippet of her in Cyberpunk 2077 as the AI in charge of a taxi, kudos to CD Projekt Red.
The game gets progressively harder with each puzzle - with you dying if you fail any of them - if/when you did you just learnt to do it better until you passed, a bit like in Groundhog Day - if life could be that simple.
Your interaction was based on using an 'aperture science handheld portal device' to give its full name - you fire a hole into a wall/floor/ceiling - and another hole into the same - then go into one hole, out the other - making portals that you create to solve puzzles.
Anyway, look it up - apparently in November it's getting a 'new gen' upgrade - on Steam at least, so I will have to wait to see what happens on my series x.
The music - pretty much based on a vibe from my recent acid trance nu-nrg techno vinyl classics mix - and one tune in particular - older heads will get it straight away, and someone will hopefully sign it up as an official remix - ha in my dreams.
So, it's dark - and remember - the aperture science 'bring your daughter to work day' is the perfect time to have her tested...

Back to the 90s again - these tracks were from '93 to '98 - a period of time when I was playing them out at clubs, parties, raves etc, mostly in London - I was part of a DJ sound system collective called 'Section 47' - thanks to a mixtape that my bro Mask gave to some old mates of his from Brighton who were starting to do house parties in Stoke Newington, N16. We soon moved up to playing in bigger clubs and warehouses in Dalston, Holborn - all around the city and North London - not forgetting the brilliant summer outdoor parties on Hackney Marshes.
It was in 1994 that we heard Andy M playing for the first time - banging acid trance nu-nrg techno from about 150-160bpm, but with melody and warmth to go with the beats - we were hooked on that style from that point on. I ended up sharing a house with Andy M in South Tottenham - we took it in turns to play last, had numerous b2bs, and had the time of our lives.
We used to buy these tunes at Chocis Chewns in Soho, and were playing out pretty much every weekend from '95 onwards.
I'd say that the majority of these tunes were from Germany - Frankfurt became the epicentre of the scene - hence my choice of cover photo - along with the Love Parade in Berlin that was held every year, similar to our Notting Hill Carnival but with banging techno instead...
Something magical happened in Germany in the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin wall - along with the rise of drum machines and the 303 of course - combined with the rise in rave culture.
I was buying and loving hardcore > jungle > dnb during this time also - played the odd gig but didn't have the connections to break into the scene properly - so this was what I was playing instead.
I have all these on vinyl - 17 of the 57 were album tracks that were not brilliantly mastered, so I have taken the liberty of seeking out the best quality digital remasters and blended them with control vinyl - the other 40 are original vinyl 12"s.
This runs from 145 - 156bpm - these were the tunes that did it for me the most - anyone old enough to remember, I hope this brings back some memories - to Andy M, Smiffee and all the S47 crew - and everyone who came to the parties - this one is for you x

Onto the year 1992 then - 30 years ago - where did that time go? Feels like yesterday to me still - no-one under 30 now was even alive then...
In a nutshell - the best raving year of my life - no question. Outdoor raves, pretty much all illegal - both smaller ones and large traveller ones like Castlemorton etc, the whole weekend spent in a field somewhere - then somehow getting it together for work on a Monday morning. What did our parents really think we were up to, and did they even care? They were around in the late 60's so there's probably loads I don't know about what they did lolz...
I don't consider this collection of tunes in any way definitive - I know there are hundreds of tunes out there that would be more than a match for the small handful I managed to pick up when I was actually near a town at the weekend and able to go to a record shop - but I think this little lot captures the essence of what 1992 was all about. Some well known chart hits, some more obscure.
Anyone who lived through this year and partied like we did - I hope this brings back some memories for you.
To everyone else - whenever you hear oldies like me babble on about how good the early 90's were - this will hopefully provide some historical context.

I've seen a fair bit of online chatter of late - about how Drake and Beyoncé have discovered House music - so I thought I would put this together for a bit of 'old skool' context.
Ever since 1986, as a 17 year old - I came across an article in The Face magazine about some DJs in Chicago - and how they used bits of other people's records to make new ones in a 4:4 disco style - but beefed up with 808 and 909 drum machines - I was totally hooked on the whole concept.
When I found the 'House Sound of Chicago' compilation album, put the needle on and heard 'Love Can't Turn Around' for the first time - wow, this is huge I thought. I then bought all these tunes over the next 3-4 years, all before my 21st birthday.
People say 'House is a feeling' - it's a whole way of life.
These tracks for me were part of the birth of rave culture in the UK - dance music in the 80's really was something special, and I consider myself extremely privileged to have been able to buy/mix all these tunes - and hear them at raves and clubs in the late 80s.
To all the older heads that lived through it all and know most/all of these - to the relative youngsters that are bossing it across all genres of dance music now - I hope you all find something to enjoy here.

A 2022 DnB update - of our 2019 155bpm 'dad techno' bootleg remix - of the stone cold classic original, from the 'Behind the Eye vol 2' album on Eye Q from 1995 - that album along with Goldie's 'Timeless' and Bob Marley's 'Rastaman Vibration' were the sounds of that summer for us.
A Roland SE-02, TR-8S, D-05 and a TB-03 were all used in the making of this - all about the midi jam for composition first, then recording the separate parts to wavs for importing into the Reason 12 sequencer - we hope you like, please DL and share with your mates if you do...

Onto the next one - part 4 - so many great tunes and remixes over the last couple of months - I've put one of mine at the start here - I'd love the actual kartoons label to pick this up, if only life were that easy - still waiting for one of my tunes to be signed for the first time - gonna keep plugging away until it happens.
